세계투데이 - 백선엽 장군 영화 ‘승리의 시작’ 주한미군 부대 상영

2026년 7월 22일 주한미군을 대상으로 한 영화 ‘승리의 시작’ 상영회가 미군 부대 한 곳에서 열렸다. 작년 여름 전국 극장에서 개봉된 이 영화는 권순도 감독이 22년간 제작한 작품이다. 백선엽 장군이 직접 6·25 전투현장에서 설명한 희귀한 기록을 남긴 작품으로 특히 군사전문가, 역사가들 사이에서 널리 알려진 다큐멘터리 영화이다.

이번 상영회에는 미 육군의 한국계 미국인 장군 박진형 준장(Brig. Gen. Jin H. Pak), 백선엽 장군의 장녀 백남희 여사, 그리고 권순도 감독이 참석해 행사의 의미를 더했다. 박 준장은 최근 7월 10일 한국전쟁의 가장 중요한 전투 중 하나가 벌어졌던 다부동에서 열린 백선엽 장군 서거 6주기 추모식에서 기념사를 했다. 그는 또한 미 육군 최초의 한국계 미국인 장성들 가운데 한 명으로 널리 알려져 있으며, 현재 미 육군 제19지원사령부(19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, 19th ESC) 사령관을 맡고 있다.

한미동맹 강화와 장병교육 차원에서 진행된 상영에 앞서 박 준장은 “군대, 그리고 육군을 하나의 전문 직업 집단(profession)으로 생각해 보면, 그것은 제도와 조직에 관한 것이기도 하고, 그 안에 있는 사람들에 관한 것이기도 합니다. 전문가란 자신의 기술과 역할에 대해 항상 더 많이 배워야 한다는 사실을 아는 사람입니다. 그리고 군복을 입은 우리에게 주어진 역할은 육군으로서 전투를 수행할 수 있는 능력을 갖추는 것입니다. 오늘 여러분은 그 역할, 즉 육군으로서 싸우는 방법에 있어 진정한 전문가가 된 한 인물을 만나게 될 것입니다. 그는 매우 위험하고 적대적인 환경 속에서, 수많은 희생자가 발생했던 치열한 전쟁을 겪으며 그 전문성을 쌓았습니다. 실제로 한국전쟁이 시작되었을 당시의 여름은 한국 역사상 가장 무더운 여름 중 하나로 기록되었습니다. 그리고 같은 해 겨울은 가장 혹독한 추위를 기록한 겨울 중 하나였습니다. 여러분은 오늘 이 인물에 대해 배우게 될 것입니다. 그는 한국전쟁 당시 지휘관으로서 실전 경험을 쌓았을 뿐만 아니라, 이후 대한민국 육군참모총장이 되어 오늘날의 현대적인 대한민국 육군을 건설하고 재건하는 데 큰 역할을 했습니다”라고 백선엽 장군을 소개하며 그에 대한 깊은 존경과 애정을 드러냈다.

백남희 여사는 많은 미군 장병들이 백선엽 장군을 귀하게 여기고, 오랫동안 기념해 주는데 대해 거듭 감사했고, 백선엽 장군이 살아생전 ‘미군의 도움이 없었다면 대한민국을 지킬 수 없었다며 한 없이 감사했다’는 사실을 상기시키며 눈물을 글썽이기도 했다. 백남희 여사의 연설 직후 미군장병들은 모두 기립박수를 하여 화답하였다.

권순도 감독은 ‘이 영화는 한미동맹의 상징인 백선엽 장군에 대한 영화임과 동시에 우리의 할아버지, 아버지, 형제, 그리고 피를 나눈 미국인 전우들에 대한 이야기’임을 언급하며 한미동맹에 대한 강조를 하였다. 이어서 ‘이 영화를 대한민국 군대는 물론 미군 부대 야전 지휘관들이 모두 보았으면 좋겠다’는 희망을 밝혔다.

200여명의 관객들은 엄숙한 분위기 속에서 집중하며 영화를 관람하였다. 상영 후 관람에 함께 한 이들의 단체 사진, 한미동맹 구호 “같이 갑시다”를 외치며 훈훈한 분위기 속에 마무리 되었다.

[General Paik Sun-yup Documentary “Act of Victory" Screened at U.S. Military Base in Korea]

July 22, 2026 — A special screening of "Act of Victory", a documentary film about General Paik Sun-yup, was held for U.S. service members at a U.S. military Base in Korea.

Originally released in cinemas across South Korea last summer, the film is the result of Director Kwon Soon-do’s 22-year production effort. The documentary is widely recognized among military professionals and historians for preserving rare footage and firsthand battlefield accounts personally narrated by General Paik Sun-yup.

The screening was attended by Brig. Gen. Jin H. Pak, a Korean American general officer in the U.S. Army; Mrs. Paik Nam-hee, the eldest daughter of General Paik Sun-yup and Director Paul Kwon, adding special significance to the event.

Brig. Gen. Pak recently delivered a commemorative address at the sixth anniversary memorial ceremony honoring General Paik Sun-yup, held on July 10 at Dabudong, the site of one of the most critical battles of the Korean War.

He is also widely known as one of the first Korean American general officers in the US Army and the current commanding general of the 19th ESC

Prior to the screening, which was organized to support military education and strengthen the ROK-U.S. Alliance, Brig. Gen. Pak introduced General Paik to the audience and expressed his deep admiration for the legendary commander.

“Professionals understand that they must continuously learn more about their craft and their responsibilities. For those of us who wear the uniform, our responsibility is to be prepared to fight and prevail as an Army,” Pak said.


“Today, you will learn about an individual who became a true expert in that profession under some of the most dangerous and hostile conditions imaginable. He earned his experience in a brutal war marked by tremendous sacrifice. Not only was he battle-tested as a commanding general during the Korean War, but he later served as Chief of Staff of the Republic of Korea Army and played a pivotal role in building and rebuilding the modern ROK Army.”

Mrs. Paik Nam-hee expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the many U.S. service members who have continued to honor and remember her father over the years. She recalled that General Paik often said during his lifetime that South Korea could not have survived without the assistance and sacrifice of American forces, and that he remained deeply grateful for that support throughout his life. Her remarks moved many in attendance, and U.S. service members responded with a standing ovation.

Director Kwon emphasized that the film is not only about General Paik Sun-yup, a symbol of the ROK-U.S. Alliance, but also about “our grandfathers, fathers, brothers, and the American brothers-in-arms with whom we shared blood and sacrifice.” He stressed the enduring value of the alliance and expressed his hope that the film would be viewed not only by members of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces but also by U.S. military field commanders throughout the alliance. Approximately 200 attendees watched the film in a solemn and respectful atmosphere.

Following the screening, participants gathered for a group photograph and concluded the event by proudly chanting the ROK-U.S. Alliance motto, “Katchi Kapshida” (“We Go Together”), bringing the evening to a warm and memorable close.
